The XCERTS New single!
THE XCERTS are back on the scene with their new single “bury you,” off their upcoming sixth album “i think i want to go home now.” The Scottish rock band collaborated closely to write the album during what the band called on Instagram “...an emotionally wrought 2025.” The previous three singles released each showcase this in their own way, but “bury you” gives its voice to the feelings of tough love and difficult self-perseverance. Lead singer Murray Macleod described the song as one he believes was “…a reflective conversation and a statement of intent…” for himself.
Now on the other side of my own listening, I can say the song is one that disguises itself as an upbeat, anthemic track with lyrics that are gritty and emotional. The chorus, which chants “don’t let it bury you,” comes across as one I’d love to scream at the top of my lungs in a pit at one of their shows. One that just tells the world the hardships of life will not bury me, nor anyone else screaming the words alongside me.
And, perfect enough, this is exactly what the band wanted. Not exactly screaming the words outward to the universe, but more what a conversation close friends have when life becomes more difficult could sound like. “Towards the end of the writing process, I was taking stock, and I wanted something that had not a sense of hope, but something that’s almost meant to feel like a sobering conversation,” Macleod says, “I had a lot of those with close friends of mine who were also having tough times during that period…”
“bury you” comes toward the end of the album’s emotional arc, placed in the center of a story about THE XCERTS’ recent life turbulence, including the passing of bassist Jordan Smith’s mother and Macleod’s father battling cancer. All together, the songs off “i think i want to go home now” showcase how the trio connected together through life’s hardships, and how by the end, they wouldn’t allow anything to bury them.
If this is how the rest of the album will sound, I’m very excited to hear the rest of the story.
“i think i want to go home now” is yours July 10th, and if you find yourself in the UK anytime soon, THE XCERTS will be touring beginning on the same day. They’ll also be supporting fellow Scottish band Twin Atlantic from October 16th-22nd.
