Unstable Shapes “For Want Of” Cover

On March 27th, Unstable Shapes released a cover of the Rites of Spring classic “For Want Of.” This is a special cover because it goes beyond music. It was originally recorded live at Icehouse MPLS from their 4th ever show back in April 26th, 2023. This song was originally part of an exclusive compilation called Escape To Weird Mountain Volume 11 which was co-released by Learning Curve Records and Forbidden Place Records to benefit the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC). The reason for the wider spread rerelease is to drive further attention and support to the immigrant community. The band hailing from Minnesota has seen firsthand how ICE has worked to tear families apart. All revenue from this cover is going to be donated to MIRAC to help reduce the damage.

The cover is an ode to the band’s early emo roots. It reminds me of punk bands from the 90s and 2000s. The melodic guitars and raw vocals are a fortuitous pair. You get lost listening to the guitar while the vocals come out to remind you of the song’s message. I highly recommend giving this cover a listen! It makes you feel deeply in ways that a song should. Also, be sure to go buy the song! It supports an important cause.
